Tara Brady is the editor of The Self-Awareness Blog, and she’s always willing to share her knowledge in a variety of ways. This month, she has a great post for us entitled, “How to Be Unaware of Your Own Self.
Brady has an excellent way of talking about self-awareness, or lack thereof. She explains the concept in a way that is so easy to understand, yet also so profound. The reason why self-awareness is so important is because we can’t predict what we will do in the future. We can’t even really make plans for what we want to do, which is why a lot of us are stuck in ruts.
Brady has a lot of interesting and relevant posts on her blog, and her latest one, How to Be Unaware of Your Own Self, is a great example of this. Brady explains in detail how we can forget that we are in control of our thoughts and actions and how to avoid making a habit of doing so. She talks about how we can learn to block out the voice in our head that tells us what to do instead.
Brady starts by talking about how we can be aware that many of our actions come from our thoughts. We can stop and say, “That’s not what I want to do,” or “I want to do this, but I have no idea what I want to do. Let me think about it.” She then explains how doing so is much easier than we think.
This is an important point. Brady shows us how we can “block” our “thoughts,” and she teaches us about how to “unblock” them. She shows us how to stop our “thoughts” from “pulling us into a mental rut,” and she shows us exactly how to turn off our autopilot.
The first step in this process is to become aware of the thoughts that are making us do what we’re supposed to do. Brady offers several ideas for this, such as writing them down or just taking one of them to task. This is helpful for the next step, which is to look at our thoughts and determine what’s making them feel uncomfortable.
Brady is a very talented writer, so it’s a shame she has this habit of writing in her head. She’s also a very good motivational speaker and I think she would be a great person to encourage your friends and family to do.
I think if you have a bad day, you can’t just do what you were planning. I think that being on autopilot can cause a lot of the problems people have with their lives. So this next step is really about being able to stop and think. I think it’s probably best to just say you’re going to do this. If you actually take the next step, you will know you’re on autopilot and can take it.
