If you’re using analytics, you should be able to see what your visitors are doing on your site. Analytics are a great tool for both keeping you informed and creating a visual map of your users so you can know where they’re coming from and where they are going.
They also let you track what pages your users are on and how they interact with your site. This way you can create what I call a “visitor map” which is a visual representation of the types of pages your users are visiting and the types of content they are interested in. This can be particularly useful if you happen to have a website that has a lot of “off-page” SEO but you don’t know where to focus your SEO efforts.
I have to admit I was a little nervous when the first time I heard about this new Google Analytics feature, because I was pretty sure I could not use it. Yet, as a developer who uses Google Analytics for quite a few websites, I have found that using it has really helped me understand how my website is doing. It has allowed me to see what areas of the site need improvement, what new content I should be creating, etc.
Yes, it is possible to build out a website the way Google recommends. However, it is also possible to build the website that way, but not in a way that will make your site rank higher. It’s called “buy-in” and it is something that should be done for your own website.
I think Google is the best tool for analyzing website traffic, but there is a lot of room for improvement. There are a lot of websites out there that will give you the exact analytics Google provides, but will not give you the information you need to do your very best SEO. To learn more about what you can and should be doing with analytics and which metrics you should be looking for, check out this post on the Moz blog.
There are a couple of ways you can get this data. Some sites have a built-in way to get analytics right through your site, so you don’t have to do the work of figuring out how to get the data yourself. For example, you might have a profile page for your website that provides a link to analytics.com that has links to your homepage.
There are other ways to get the data, but the key is through the site as a whole. The Moz blog post also explores how to get analytics right through your site from the front page, but that is a topic for another post.
I get that this is an important point. I’ve spent a lot of time on Google, so I know that it’s hard to get accurate results from Google without knowing the user experience of the users.
While I love the idea of getting a lot of data on my site, the reality is that most analytics platforms don’t do a good job of getting it right. The Moz blog post on getting analytics right includes a link to this post, and this post includes a great set of links to a few different tools that will get you started with analytics right.
