So, you’re looking at the new lens technology as a kind of jumpstart for the age of the digital camera. Is this really true? Well, before you make that leap of faith, let’s take a quick look at some of the issues and potential downsides.
The problem is that with digital cameras taking photos and storing them in digital form, the data they store is still in the pixels on the film. So let’s start with the obvious. If you happen to know someone who uses a lens and are trying to find ways to make them more effective, then you should definitely be sending them a note. This makes sense if we think about it. Take for example the wide-angle lens that’s been around for quite a while now. The fact of the matter is that most people don’t need that kind of light. If you need the zoom on a smartphone, you can get it through another lens. If you want to shoot landscapes where the sun is low in the sky, you can either use a zoom lens or get a wide-angle lens. And so on.
This is why the new lens technology is to jumpstart, because it’s basically the same in that it allows you to use the same lens but with smaller apertures, or with a smaller focus distance. In fact, you can even use the same lens and have it produce a completely different image, depending on how far away you are from your subject.
This is also why we use a variety of lenses on our cameras, to give us more flexibility. Because if you use one lens, you have to use one aperture, and if you use two apertures, you have to use two apertures. As a result, you don’t have to change your lenses to change your camera.
