For a long time, the biggest data sets we were able to open up our customers were through the Amazon S3 service. And it wasn’t just the size of the data sets that made us excited. We could also see that the data sets were easy to use and that no one had to get them all. Amazon has always been a leader in building data sets, so we were pretty excited about how this feature will open up even more data sets for our customers.
Amazon’s new data service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), can now make it easy to put together data sets that are as small as about 300MB, although that will change once the new version of Amazon’s compute service, Amazon Machine Image (AMI), comes out. The basic idea is that the customer uploads a file containing data sets, sets of data, or data sets, and then Amazon can take that file and turn it into an AMI file.
It’s a lot of data. The Amazon Web Services AMI file contains a list of about 300 data sets, each about 250 MB, that Amazon can then use to launch instances of various Amazon Web Services services such as Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Elasticsearch, and Amazon Redshift. It’s pretty clever, and it’ll make it easier for our customers to get their data sets to us. We look forward to seeing the results of these first test runs of the new service.
Amazon is going to be using a combination of Amazon Elasticsearch and Amazon DynamoDB to power this new service. It’s still to be determined exactly how DynamoDB will be implemented, but Amazon has stated that the goal is to have Amazon DynamoDB become the central service that drives the entire Amazon Web Services ecosystem. The current AWS data model is a lot more granular than Amazon Web Services but it can be used in a lot more ways.
