I am often asked “what kind of projects do you do on workday?” as it relates to my full time job, and this is a question that I find myself answering in the hopes that others can too.
While a lot of my workday activities are related to what I do on the job, I do like to have some time on my own to really focus on a personal project of my own. I like to be able to get the hours I need to actually work on something that I would have otherwise been procrastinating on.
It seems that a lot of times I’m procrastinating on things that I should be working on. I don’t know what it is, but I find this to be a problem. I know that I should be working on my projects, but I don’t always feel like I have enough time to go through a project that has been sitting on my to do list for a long time.
It’s important to take personal projects that you need to work on seriously. Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant flow of what’s going on in the world around you. You have a day job, a house, a blog, your kids, your friends, a new baby, etc. it seems like there’s just so much going on that you need to be paying attention to, but instead, you don’t.
I think this is a really healthy attitude. It keeps us focused on the important stuff in life, rather than all that stuff that doesn’t matter. If we focus on the little things, we forget that most of the stuff we do today is going to make us feel better in the long-run, so we end up spending a lot of time and energy in the short-run that isnt.
It’s also the reason that most of us don’t get much done. Sure you might have a ton of stuff happen while you’re doing that stuff, but that doesn’t mean you have to be doing all of those things. I actually think it might be better to focus on more productive tasks that will bring you more joy in the long-run.
I think the best way to do this is to plan your things and prioritize them. Work with your best self to get things done. Then take it a notch down when you dont get it done.
I often find myself going on a “workday” and then not even getting back to work until I do my laundry. And I’m usually on the computer that whole time. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to work on a computer all day. I think it should be done while you’re doing something else like doing laundry or something.
At some point you’ll learn that the more you do the bigger the reward. You’ll also learn that it is better to do things that go against the grain with your best self. You can have your work cut out for you by your family or friends, but by doing it for yourself you’ll be rewarded with a deeper connection to them.
